The Good Shepherd Organization will conduct an essay competition for school children at Fatorda on June 26 to mark International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Rally for drug awareness: Positive People in collaboration with Goa state AIDS control society will organize a rally to mark International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking on June 26 beginning at 9.30am from Panaji church square to the Don Bosco oratory. To commemorate the day, a workshop on ‘empowering youth to counter drug abuse and illicit trafficking’ will be held at Fr Agnel college of art and commerce, Pilar, from 3pm to 5.30pm. On June 27, the anti-narcotic cell has decided to hold a rally of school students and members of the home guards and civil defense from Kala Academy in Campal, Panaji, to the Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji. The rally will be flagged off by director general of police, Goa, at 8.45am at Kala Academy.
Marathi film screening: Marathi film ‘Maati Maay’ will be screened at Sunaparanta at Altinho on June 26 at 6.30pm. Producer and director Chitra Palekar will introduce the 95-minute film and Sachin Chatte will be in conversation with her post the screening. ‘Maati Maay’ is a grave-keeper’s tale based on a short story (Baayen) by well-known writer Mahasweta Devi.
‘Sangod’ festival at Candolim: The traditional ‘Sangod’ festival at Orda, Candolim, will be held on June 29, the feast day of St Peter and St Paul, the patron saint of fishermen. The festival is celebrated onboard fishing boats. A chapel and a stage are erected on around three boats, which are bound together and Konkani stage performances are held. The audience watches the show from the banks of the river. The festival is organized annually by the St Khuris chapel committee, Orda, Candolim. A spokesman for the organizing committee said that there is going to be a change in the festival this time, with only two halts being made along the river bank. In earlier years there used to be six stops alongside the river for the villagers to view the performances. He also said that popular tiatr artistes will perform during the festival, alongside local villagers. The festival will start at 2.30pm and end by sunset.
‘Formative weekend’ for youth at Raia: The Jesuit Fathers of Pedro Arrupe Institute, Raia, will organize a free overnight formative weekend for youth/young professionals from 4.30pm on June 29 to 2pm on June 30 at their institute. There will be two categories: 15 to 22 age group and 23 to 35 age group. There will also be a free bus service from Panaji, states a press note. Talk on breast cancer: Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji, will conduct a talk on breast cancer by cancer specialist Dr Shekhar Salkar on July 6. Dr Salkar will speak on precautionary measures to be taken and the causes of the disease. The programme will begin at 9.30am in the conference hall of Institute Menezes Braganza.
Poetry writing competition: On July 8, to mark the death anniversary of Late Bakibab Borkar, Institute Menezes Braganza will organize a poetry writing competition for higher secondary, college and university students.
