Congress in Goa on Monday said that the party manifesto for the forthcoming polls would include a demand for a complete ban on the non-Goans and non-farmers from buying agriculture land in the state.

Goa Congress spokesperson Ramakant Khalap said that this point has been included in the party manifesto for bringing about a solution to land scarcity, faced by the tiny state.

Ahead of the March 3 assembly polls, the Congress is giving final touches to its election manifesto, which is likely to be made public in the next two weeks. A special committee, headed by the former Union Minister of State for External Affairs Eduardo Faleiro has been formed for this.

Khalap, who is the convenor of the Faleiro Committee, said that the intention behind the move is to ensure that the land is being saved and preserved for future generations.

“Drying land resources due to real estate has been a major concern for the state,” Khalap said.

Congress has promised to enact a law, once elected to power that would make it compulsory for an individual to reside in the state for 25 years, to claim himself to be a Goan, which would entitle him to buy an agriculture property if he is a farmer.

“Even a farmer from other states won’t be allowed to buy a property in Goa,” he said.

The party also intends to penalise the local farmers who keep their lands fallow.

“The farmers would be encouraged to cultivate the land,” he said.

“All the Goans, who are committed towards ‘Goa for Goans’, should not sell the agriculture properties,” Khalap said.

Congress in Tight Spot

Congress is facing immense pressure from the Muslim Organizations for the nominations in the March 3rd Assembly Elections. They are demanding their share in contesting elections. So far, the congress has chosen to reserve their comments regarding this matter, in order not to cause a chaos on the eve of the elections.

The Muslims have a huge presence of more than half of eight constituencies in salcete and they are not ready to lose support this big. There is also a sizebale presence of the Muslim community in Margao (represented by chief minister Digambar Kamat) and in Navelim (represented by Churchill Alemao). The influence of this community can also be seen in Fatorda, Curtorim, Cuncolim and Velim.

Congress Minority Cell Convener Urfan Mullah raised his concern regarding no representation of the Muslim community in the legislative assembly and said that even though they have demanded minimal seats, the party (congress) has no plans to nominate even a single member to the elections.
On being questioned, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that the issue has to be taken up by the Congress party in New-Delhi.

All Goa Mahila Congress Convention to be held

An All Goa Mahila Congress Convention is to be held at Velsao at 5 PM on 7^th January. This convention is organized by the Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (GPMC). Dignitaries like Anita Verma, GPCC President Subhash Shirodkar, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, Deputy Speaker Mavin Godinho will be present said GPMC President, Cynthia  D’silva. She believes that as the elections are drawing closer, women in Goa should not lag behind in contesting elections. She also added that Goan women need a push to boost their confidence. She believes that she is capable of winning the elections this time. According to her, congress has been the backbone of women community for years together. Giving examples of the women leaders like Indira Gandhi, President Pratibha Patil and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi of our country. Cynthia feels that congress has helped various women to lead the country into a state of prosperity and development.
