Within hours of getting a resounding mandate, Manohar Parrikar sowed the first signs that he is willing to be different. He posted a message on his Facebook page saying “Thank you, I promise to deliver”.

Are we seeing a new, accommodating, people-friendly future chief minister. We hope so.

In a sense, this resounding mandate can have two effects. Either he goes back to his aloof, slightly-arrogant self or respects the mandate of the people and heals the scars inflicted by the previous government. The chances are that he will do the latter.

He has a huge mandate, unlike in the past. 21 seats in the house of 40 as against its 2002 tally of 17 seats when it formed a government with the support of UGDP, MGP and an independent candidate.

When he first came to power in October 2000, the BJP withdrew support from the government run by a Congress splinter group led by Francisco Sardinha.

In 2002, the BJP coalition government functioned under the shadow of uncertainty even as Parrikar scored some brownie points for good administration, but also earned the ire of his colleagues for his arrogant style of functioning.

Parrikar also lost the trust of the minorities when his government attempted to cancel the Good Friday and Feast of Francis St Xavier holidays.

But his position now is far stronger, and he will not be dependent either on the independents or his allies though he has graciously included them in his team.

The BJP’s total strength along with its alliance partners is 26 – BJP (21) , MGP (3) and independents (2), and gives it a comfortable majority and a free hand to deliver on large number of promises he has made to Goans.

It’s almost like his examination has just begun as he takes over as chief minister of Goa in the next two days. His stand on important issues such as medium of instruction (MoI), illegal mining, the Regional Plan will be in sharp focus. And he has already told the press that his government will cancel the Regional Plan 2021.

He has the best wishes but also the sharp eye of the people of Goa. His time starts now.

“All 650 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) across polling booths in South Goa talukas were moved in the strong rooms spread across Kare Law College and Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics by Sunday morning. Counting will commence at 8 a.m on March 6 and till then the EVMs will be kept under stringent security. Candidates were present while strong rooms were sealed,” added Mr Redkar.
Disclosing that election results are likely to be out in four hours on March 6, Mr Redkar also divulged that training on counting of votes for government servants also begun on Sunday.
Goa recorded a record breaking turnout for election at around 80 per cent voter turnout in South Goa while North Goa recorded around 82 per cent voting aggregating to 81.62 per cent of voter turnout across the state.
Mr Redkar stated that the people at large have been cooperative in abiding by the rules imposed due to the code of conduct which he said would be lifted on March 6. “There have been no reports of clashes, violence or fights across South Goa on a Sunday post polls. Section 144 which has been enforced will be in place until March 6 till the counting process ends,” Mr Redkar added.
Meanwhile, the independent candidates Mr Jawahar Dias from Fatorda, Mr Raju Iyer from Curtorim, Mr Ivo Coutinho from Margao and ‘India against Corruption’ members along with the Bharatiya Janata Party member, Mr Laurel Abranches complained of sitting MLAs across party lines misusing police machinery on Election Day.
“Despite booths like Pandawa Chapel polling booth and Mahila Nutan polling booth being declared hypersensitive, there was no police force to stop unlawful assembly. Supporters held and dragged voters’ hands asserting them to vote for particular candidate. Police machinery was misused on election day,” stated social activist and polling agent for an independent candidate, Mr Sanjeev Raiturkar.
Mr Jawahar Dias, an independent candidate from Fatorda, who is an advocate by profession, pointed out that as per rules, the government needs to be dissolved prior to election but the government continued to stay in power only to misuse government machinery.
Another activist, Mr Sriram Raiturkar, pointed out that several complaints of public meetings after 11 a.m were recorded with the Election Commission in Margao but added that no action was taken in this regard

High turnout could differ results in constituencies
MARGAO: The huge turn out of voters in Congress stronghold of Salcete has thrown up questions whether the turn out would hit the heavyweights in the political arena over the decades.
The heavyweights, however, begged to differ. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said the question whether the turn out would affect the ruling dispensation would depend from one constituency to another. “In Margao, I am confident that my victory margin would go up with the turn out”, he said. Kamat also attributed the heavy turn out to the role played by the Booth Level Officers and the compacting of electoral rolls.
While his opponents in Cuncolim say the people have come out to defeat the two-time sitting MLA, Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao says the huge turn out will go in his favour. “People have come out to vote and support me for the development and the employment provided to the youth of the constituency”, he said.
In Nuvem, Goa Vikas Party Chief Mickky Pacheco says the turn out will go in his favour, saying the people are fed up with the performance of the sitting MLA. “With this turn out, I expect to win the seat by a margin of 3500 votes”, he said.
His arch rival and four-time MLA Alexio Sequeira, however, said that the turn out will help him regain the seat.
“After analyzing the polling trends, I am confidence the turn out will ensure my victory”, Alexio added.
In Fatorda, two-time sitting MLA Damu Naik said that people have come out in large numbers in his support. However, his arch rival Independent candidate Vijai Sardessai says that the turn out will go in his favour as it is a clear indication of the people coming out to vote for a change.
PWD Minister Churchill Alemao says that the heavy turn out of voters would keep him in good stead, but his challenger Avertano Furtado asserted that thousands of voters came out for polling to bring about a change in the constituency.

“Vote RING and Elect 26 year old Youth Force Of Goa Independent candidate Mr.Osbert D’Cunha from Saligao constituency. Vote for change. Contesting for the youth of Goa. He is the President of Youth Force Of Goa(YFG). This Group was started by Osbert 2years back with 20 members and today YFG is the network of 2,500 youth all over Goa. The motive behind Osbert to start this g…roup was to un…ite……… all the Goan youth irrespective of caste, religion, occupation or political affiliation, so as to work for the betterment of Goa, to fight against the problem of unemployment.

Today we find that, there is nobody to address the problems of the youth in the legislative assembly and we want somebody youth only to be in the assembly. Most of the politicians say that “ Youth power is the nation power” but actually they don’t mean it. If that was the case then
= Government jobs would have not been sold for a price
= Youth would have not been used at the time of elections for their benefits and taken advantage of unemployment.

We all members of YFG have taken this step to put our president Mr. Osbert D’Cunha as our representive and the candidate from Saligao constituency to solve the problems of youth and people of Goa. He has proved himself as a good leader of our group.

Youth Force Of Goa today have given several jobs to our members in private sectors in Goa and overseas. Today we have one of our member Mr. Gangaram Kale as the corporator of Panaji municipal council. YFG is the trusted organization of Goa. It is also registered under Societies registration act with license number Goa/855/2010. YFG organized several programs and promoted hidden youth talent.

We youth appeal all people from Saligao constituency to vote our candidate Mr. Osbert D’Cunha for a change in Politics of Goa.
